PLEASE JOIN US AT NOON on Friday, April 16   IN THE CHANDLER PARK GAZEBO FOR A PRESS CONFERENCE/PICNIC WITH A MINI-CONCERT IN HONOR OF WTND-FM (Low Power, Macomb) AND ITS NEW PROGRAMMING and WEBSITE.

WTND-FM 106.3, a low power community radio station for Macomb, has added new national news programming to its 24-hour broadcast schedule. These significant shows are not available anywhere else on the radio in west-central Illinois, and provide alternative information and perspectives not heard on the news and talk shows on commercial or public radio.

It is now presenting Democracy Now, Free Speech Radio News, Making Contact, This Way Out, Between the Lines, Counterspin, and LeShow.

The mini-concert on Friday will feature folk singer, songwriter and activist Anne Feeney and her colleague Evan Greer, who are on a Generations of Resistence tour through the Midwest.

WTND is owned by an Illinois not-for-profit corporation and operated by Macomb residents Tom DePauw and Darryl Roberts.  It has been on the air since 2003 thanks to the volunteer efforts of dozens of radio fans.

Barr and Hopkins worked over the past year to get WTND back on firmer financial footing.  Barr said the effort  began with rumors about the station at the Macomb Area Alliance for Peace and Justice weekly vigils held Saturday mornings during the Bush Administration.

The 2009 “Celebration of Resistance to War and Waste” brought Darryl and Tom out with recording equipment.  DePauw and Roberts recorded:
  •  Iraq war veteran and WIU student Adam Brown  “THE PLIGHT OF IRAQI WAR VETS: Invisible Injuries Uncounted,”
  • WIU graduate  Kristy Dykema “WHAT WAR?: Psychological Distancing of Americans from War on Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan;”
  • IL Green Gubernatorial Candidate Rich Whitney “The 100 Days Campaign to End Torture and the State of Civil Liberties in America,”  or “The Need to Continue Opposition to the Occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq.
DePauw and Roberts are also digitizing musical performances from that day in Middle Earth’s open area (which saw over 100 attend despite a late winter snowstorm) which include: Music by Erin and Chris and David Rovics.

David Rovics’ Fall appearance in Macomb thankfully brought Tom and Darryl out again.  "This time Elaine Hopkins jumped into action and, thanks to Elaine’s daughter, Ginger Wheeler, we now have a sustainable web presence which will ensure fundraising for a continued on-air presence,” said Barr.

Hopkins says David Rovics will be featured in a Fall fundraiser party the radio station hopes to turn into an annual, fun event.  “The Carbondale community radio station is something we’re trying to model ourselves after, eventually,”  said Hopkins, adding  “We hope to make this a place where lots of new local voices can also be heard, in additional to the unique national and international perspectives WTND brings Macomb.”

For more information on the station, its schedule and coverage area, see its newly revamped website at www.wtnd.us.

  1. You're just telling us about this NOW, after no posts for over two weeks? Like we have nothing else to do? OK, I'll just cancel my doctor's appointment to go to a picnic with 10 other people for a radio station that I never listen to. Yeah, thanks.

  2. I totally agree with anon 5:47. As much as dirty berates administrators, technology, etc on this campus, it seems they good do a better job.
Maybe dirty is out solving all of the problems they have highlighted and are finalizing their solutions they will present soon. Being a sideline quaterback is so easy and fun.
Perhaps they will solve the federal deficit and healthcare next.

  3. Hey, Anon 5:47 and 9:09. it's a *Press Release* for God's sake. All DW is doing is sharing some info. No need to get all hostile. Go down to Chandler Park and march for peace and justice - you may feel better.

  4. The nasty comments show how badly Macomb needs this station's presence. Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman alone would be enough, but Tom and Darryl also carry other great programming. But these COMMENTS. So nasty. So demeaning. So derisive of people who try to change the sordid state of affairs the U.S. got led into by the military industrial complex. Yes, Anon 9:09--little old people can help end wars,
and solve deficit problems (see above)
and get the health insurance companies off our backs if they'll CHOOSE to step outside their comfort zones and listen to non-corporate influenced means of information.
By the way--here's what the Carbondale community radio station site looks like.

    Remember Margaret Mead's statement:
"A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
And anonymous 5:47. Don't listen. Keep sending your kids and inlaws off as immoral mercenaries or cannon fodder and watch what happens when they come back stateside.

  5. Thanks, Anon.
And for all: These are great shows, an alternative to Limbaugh, et.al. Visit the website www.wtnd.us for the schedule. If you have any spare money, give some to the station through the website. The technology is expensive.

  7. Hey Anon 1:19: Given your critiquing of vocabulary/spelling/grammer, I take it you are a acedemic, so I assume you have finished your 20 hours of work this week. You're a BIG sympton also.

  8. As a fan of WTND's programming and great music, I am disgusted by the lack of community support for a local radio station as exemplified by the previous posts. Regardless of personal politics, Tom and Daryl have worked really hard to bring an alternative voice to the Macomb airwaves. I applaud efforts for continuing community outreach for their station, and am ashamed that other members of this community object so strongly to media that does not reflect corporate interests. The demeanor displayed on this thread is an embarrassing reminder of the attitudes which divide the populous and prevent Macomb from being a decent place to live.

  9. I've no opinion, nor do I care, about the whining and snarky politics posted above, but I can say that WTND is an absolute treasure for this community. Talk about diversity - community radio is where it's at, folks. No commercials; no corporate interests; an unusual, eclectic mix of music you won't hear anywhere else, and it's run by two locals who quite simply seem to be doing it for their love of radio. Anyone who hasn't heard this station is missing out on a real treat.
